The problem

Churubusco High School needed more training capacity, but the opportunity was not in expanding an existing weight room. It was in repurposing space the school already had.

An existing maintenance room was converted into a new strength facility to support athletes across all sports. The previous training setup had outdated equipment and too few stations, limiting how many athletes could train at one time.

Program growth and school investment created the opportunity to build a more capable space with more stations, better storage, and a layout designed around how athletes and coaches would actually use the room.

The objective

Churubusco focused on three priorities:

  • Add more usable training stations
  • Improve athlete traffic flow
  • Increase the overall carrying capacity of the facility

The design also needed to make the most of the 3,500-square-foot footprint while keeping the room organized and maintaining clear coaching sightlines.

The design

Stray Dog worked with Churubusco’s coaches and administration to plan the project around the school’s budget, timeline, equipment needs, and desired layout.

Because the space had previously served as a maintenance room, the project started with a clean opportunity to rethink how the footprint could function as a training environment.

The final layout centered on 12 Alpha Double Half Racks, supported by 12 benches and 16 platforms.

The equipment plan included:

  • 12 rack stations
  • 12 benches
  • 16 platforms
  • PowerBlock trays
  • Horizontal bumper plate storage

The Double Half Rack layout helped create more training positions within the room without sacrificing movement between stations. Dedicated storage also kept dumbbells and bumper plates organized and off the main training floor.

A 3D facility design was used before installation so the Churubusco team could review the layout, equipment placement, and room flow before the project moved forward.

The install

Stray Dog handled delivery and installation for the project.

Once the facility plan was approved, the team installed the Alpha Double Half Racks, benches, platforms, and storage systems according to the final layout.

The installation completed the conversion of the former maintenance room into a dedicated high school strength facility built for daily use by athletes and students.

The results

Churubusco finished the project with a higher-capacity training space and a much better use for an existing part of the school.

The new facility provides:

  • More usable training stations
  • Better athlete flow
  • Improved equipment storage
  • Cleaner coaching sightlines
  • Greater overall training capacity
