Ionia High School

SCHOOL/ ORGANIZATION Ionia High School
LOCATION Ionia, Michigan
FACILITY SIZE 2,550 sq. ft.
ATHLETES SERVED 50-75+
SPORTS SUPPORTED Multi-Sport

The problem

Ionia High School wanted to improve how efficiently its strength and conditioning program could serve student-athletes.

The existing room was limited by outdated equipment and too few training stations. In a 2,550-square-foot footprint, that meant capacity was tight and the room was not working as efficiently as the program needed.

The project was driven by a simple goal: make the existing space more useful for more athletes without expanding the room.

The objective

Ionia focused on three priorities:

  • Add more usable training stations
  • Improve traffic flow through the room
  • Increase the number of athletes the facility could support at one time

The space also needed to stay organized and give coaches clearer sightlines across the room.

The design

Stray Dog worked with the school’s coaches and administration to plan the project around budget, timeline, equipment needs, and the dimensions of the existing room.

The final layout used 12 Alpha Full Racks, creating 12 dedicated training stations within the 53' x 47' footprint.

The equipment plan included:

  • 12 Alpha Full Racks
  • 12 benches
  • PowerBlock rack-mounted trays

No dedicated platforms were included, which helped preserve floor space and keep the room flexible.

The rack-mounted PowerBlock trays also helped keep dumbbells and accessories off the floor and close to the stations where athletes use them.

A 3D facility design was used before installation so the school could review the layout, equipment placement, and overall room flow before the project moved forward.

The install

Stray Dog handled delivery and installation for the Ionia project.

Once the facility plan was approved, the team installed the Alpha Full Racks, benches, and rack-mounted storage according to the final design.

Because the project was built inside an existing 2,550-square-foot room, the installation needed to stay disciplined around spacing and movement so the added stations did not make the facility feel crowded.

The results

Ionia finished the project with a more efficient strength facility that makes better use of the same footprint.

The new space provides:

  • More usable training stations
  • Better athlete flow
  • Improved storage
  • Cleaner coaching sightlines
  • Greater overall training capacity
