The problem

Warren G. Harding High School needed a training space that could better support the demands of its athletic programs, particularly during the winter months.

The existing setup was limited by outdated equipment and insufficient capacity, making it difficult to train full teams efficiently. The broader fieldhouse project created an opportunity to build a more complete indoor training environment that could support strength work, conditioning, sprinting, and multiple training styles under one roof.

The goal was to give athletes a space that could serve all sports, both in season and out of season, while also remaining useful for students and administrators.

The objective

The project focused on three priorities:

  • Maximize the number of usable training stations
  • Add more resistance options for athletes, students, and administrators
  • Create a facility that supports winter strength and conditioning

The room also needed to work alongside the new indoor turf field and track so athletes could move easily between strength training and speed work.

The design

Stray Dog designed the space around a broad range of primary athletic movements and resistance options.

The layout used a mix of Alpha Double Half Racks and Alpha Half Racks, supported by 12 benches and 12 platforms. ATR storage units were positioned around the room to keep equipment organized and accessible without interrupting the primary training areas.

The equipment plan supported:

  • Primary barbell movements
  • Dumbbell training
  • Cable-based resistance
  • Slam ball work
  • Auxiliary strength movements
  • General fitness use

The strength area was planned to complement the fieldhouse’s manual cardio area, indoor track, and turf space so athletes could transition directly from lifting into sprinting and other conditioning work.

A 3D facility design was used during the planning process so the school could review the layout and how the strength area would function alongside the rest of the fieldhouse.

The install

Stray Dog handled installation for the Warren G. Harding project.

The equipment, platforms, benches, storage, and training systems were installed according to the approved design, with the goal of keeping the lifting area contained, organized, and easy to navigate.

The perimeter storage strategy helped preserve usable training space within the 90' x 30' footprint.

The results

The completed facility improved room flow, training efficiency, and the number of athletes the school can serve at one time.

The new setup provides:

  • More usable training stations
  • Better equipment storage
  • Improved athlete flow
  • More resistance options
  • A contained lifting area
  • Easier transitions between strength and speed training
  • Greater flexibility for different users and training styles

The facility can now support 90+ athletes at one time, while the adjacent indoor track and turf areas give teams additional space for speed, conditioning, and field-based work.

One of the biggest operational improvements is the ability for athletes to move directly from strength training into sprint work without leaving the fieldhouse. The result is a more complete indoor performance environment that gives Warren G. Harding athletes greater flexibility to train throughout the year.
